Dr Jayapradamba degree college was started to embody the values of knowledge, integrity, discipline and service that Dr Kasaraneni jayapradamba and her famous husband, Dr K Sadasiva Rao upheld throughout their lives. Dr Jayapradamba was a lady with high ideals and humanitarian values. Known simply as ‘Doctoramma garu’, she was both a beacon of hope and a role model for many women in her time.
After her death, her family members and close associates set up a Trust in her name and started the degree college to give opportunity to students to gain qualifications and skills to enable them to be confident and self sufficient.
Hailing from a small village Kalavapamula in Krishna District, she was the first woman to have completed a high school education from her village. Her aspirations to become a doctor were supported by her parents and grandmother who were progressive beyond their times. Only women from rich families were able to go to college those days, let alone do Medical course.
With moral support of the family and financial help from scholarships, she completed her studies at the prestigious Madras Medical College.
During her college days, she took part in the activities of Gandhiji’s Freedom movement. She wrote several short stories reflecting her idealism, some of which were published in Krishna Patrika etc.
She met Dr K Sadasiva Rao who was a like minded idealistic and progressive thinker like herself. They married in the rationalistic wedding ceremony propounded by Kaviraju, without any pomp.
They started to practice medicine in Guntur and it is not an exaggeration that she had been the backbone of his success as a doctor, educationist, philanthropist and politician.
She raised funds to construct the Gandhi Centenary building with the support of Late Konda Parvathi Devi. She ran ‘Balwadis’ in Guntur district with help from her friend, Smt Sulochana Devi of Neerukonda.
Although she was offered a post in the Women and Social Welfare Committee by the Government, she refused the coveted position, putting her family and her husband first.
She helped many people unostentatiously - not only financially, butmorally and socially as well by finding them employment, giving them shelter and most importantly helping with their education.
She firmly believed that education is the route to emancipation of the down trodden, especially women, by empowering them and helping them to stand on their own feet.
